What is a Project Lifecycle?

A project lifecycle is a series of stages that a well-managed project goes through, from inception to completion.

It is often managed by using a project management methodology.  Examples of standard methodologies include Prince 2 and the OGC (Office of Government Commerce) Guidelines.  However, organisations often devise their own methodology, perhaps based on one of the standard ones, but tailored to their particular environment.  You may even have different methodologies for different types of projects.

Usually the methodology embodies a principle of gaining approval at the end of each major stage of the project before moving on to the next.  This ensures that the project progresses in a controlled manner.  There may also be a requirement for a defined outcome or set of products to be produced as part of the successful completion of each stage.
